Invitation: Britain and Europe – a constructive way forward

The consequences of the British voters’ decision to leave the European Union and the future relationship between the UK and the EU remain uncertain. We believe it is essential to look beyond the present turmoil and to address how concerns of both the UK and the EU can be accommodated for in order to successfully move forward. Therefore, within the framework of a seminar series held during spring 2017, we intend to discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with the ambition to generate a constructive dialogue.

Topic: ‘Beyond ‘control’ – options for dispute resolution after the British withdrawal’

Rhodri Thompson QC is a leading practitioner and expert on EU law. He recently represented the claimant, Mrs Miller, in the Article 50 case before the Supreme Court in the UK where it was decided that the British government cannot alone decide to notify the EU of the British intention to withdraw and that such a decision has to be sanctioned by the British Parliament. In his talk, Mr Thompson will discuss the future status of the European Court of Justice in UK law and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms for UK trade agreements after the British withdrawal from the European Union.
